This advice is not intended to replace a drug treatment and is not a substitute for a medical diagnosis, screening or medical consultation. They are complementary and not alternative. Sandra Dupont disclaims all liability for the effects of normal use (allergy or intolerance) or not suitable for all that is written in this article. Essential oils can present toxic risks, it is imperative that each user is informed of good aromatherapy practices before their use.

What is COVID-19 coronavirus?

Disease: Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) Virus that causes COVID-19: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) COVID-19 (previously known as “2019 novel coronavirus”) is in 80% of cases asymptomatic (showing no symptoms). The figures are therefore difficult to estimate, but in the 20% of the remaining cases, it would seem that SARS-CoV-2 can cause death in 4% of cases, primarily in patients over 40 years of age. Diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma, amongst other conditions are risk factors for complications and seriousness

It is legitimate today in France, in HK and all over the world to adopt a prevention approach that includes Essential Oils (E.O.s) and plants. Below are some suggestions for how you might do this.

Warning: the advice below is not intended to cure coronavirus (because no E.O. is documented on this new virus), but is instead intended to support immune system function and therein limit effects of a virus in order to allow our bodies systems to be better prepared for it.

(Note: You will find at the end of this post the bibliographic references of the scientific publications on which I rely and which support the clinical expertise cited)

Wake up your immune system

Immunity is the first level that we are aiming to activate, especially since certain E.O’s are indeed very powerful in supporting lymphocytes and macrophages. Lymphocytes and macrophages are two types of white blood cells which serve various helpful roles in our immune system.

With a considered aromatherapeutic approach, we can rely on the anti-viral properties of essential oils and stimulate the two pathways of our immunity. These two pathways are:

  1. Specific immunity (which promotes antibody synthesis)
  2. Innate immunity (which promotes the synthesis of macrophages and killer cells).

Essential oils have proven their effects on many viruses, such as that of the H1N1 flu and HPV (human papillomavirus).

How to wake up your immune system:

(Advice for adults and adolescents from 15 years old)

  1. Take Vitamin D3: Adults and teens 2000 IU every morning. Children 400 IU every morning.
  2. Take liposomal vitamin C or acerola: 500mg per day for adults and teenagers over 15 years old.
  3. Go to bed earlier and optimize the quality of your sleep. The first consequence of tiredness is a weakened immune system.
  4. Cleanse your liver, doing an 8-day course of rosemary or artichoke herbal tea (this is not recommended in case of high blood pressure, epilepsy or hormone-dependent cancer), and opt at the same time for a frugal diet (less sugar, less alcohol, remove dairy products), hypotoxic and colorful (rich antioxidants and minerals).
  5. Calm your nervous system because it cooperates with the immune system to stimulate defenses. Manage your stress and anxiety which are both sources of lowered immunity, visualize the positive and stay away from alarmist content relayed by the media.
  6. Hand disinfection – It is advisable to wash your hands as often as possible with soap and water, or if soap is not available, to disinfect them with a hydro-alcoholic sanitizing solution or gel. 1 drop of Essential oil of Bay laurel (Laurus nobilis) can be placed in the palm of the hand, as an additional shield two to three times a day.

How to protect your nose and ENT pathways

It is strongly recommended to spray an oily solution of properly diluted E.O’s directly into the nose, using a bottle dedicated to this use (one with a nasal tip, which can be found in pharmacies or on the internet). The contact of E.O’s with the nasal and respiratory mucosa offers immediate immunity to the germs present thanks to the various anti-infectious properties of E.O’s. An aromatic lipophilic film lines the respiratory mucosa to reduce the chances of virus replication. The lipophilic nature of E.O’S allows them to cross the envelope and the capsid of the virus to destroy the viral organisation.

If in a public place, in additional to local and WHO recommended prevention measures, put 1 spray in each nostril of the following blend. a maximum of 3 times-a-day (not recommended in children under 15 years of age, in case of asthma, epilepsy, during pregnancy and breastfeeding, or if prone to nose bleedings).

Recommended Protective Nasal Oil
To be made in a clean 30ml tinted glass bottle, fitted with a nasal tip. Bay laurel E.O Laurus nobilis (6 drops) Ravintsara E.O Cinnamomum camphora CT 1.8 cineole (6 drops) Tea tree E.O Melaleuca alternifolia (6 drops) Calendula macerate oil (29.5 ml)

Important: The aromatherapy blend and advice that follows (doses and frequency of application proposed) are the fruit of personal expertise which has brought very satisfactory results in various contexts of common viral infections. I have no experience specific to COVID-19, but I share my perspective and wider experience in this article, to allow people likely to be in contact with the coronavirus to increase their chance of blocking infection.

The properties of Bay Laurel Essential Oil, which I have included in both blends in this article are as listed here for reference: Immunostimulant, antiviral and powerful antibiotic, precisely on RNA viruses like the coronavirus responsible for acute respiratory syndromes, analgesic.

Recommended blend to fight SARS-CoV-2

In case of symptoms (fever and sudden tiredness, dry cough), wear a mask to avoid collateral contamination and limit the spread of disease, and follow the below protocol by also encouraging everyone you have come into contact with to follow it also.

To be made in a 100ml tinted glass bottle, fitted with a dropper.

Bay laurel E.O Laurus nobilis (4 ml) – Documented anti-viral on influenza viruses and corona viruses Tea tree E.O Melaleuca alternifolia (4 ml) – Documented anti-viral on influenza viruses and corona viruses) Thyme linalool, E.O Thymus vulgaris CT linalool (2 ml) – Immune stimulant, antitussive Copahu balm E.O Copaiba officinalis (2 ml) – Immune stimulant, activation of Natural Killers, anti-inflammatory – beta-caryophyllene Nigelle sativa base oil & Calendula officinalis Macerate (88ml)

Cautions: Not recommended for Children under 7, those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, suffer from asthma, allergic to one or the other E.O, those with eczematous skin, and not recommended in case of epilepsy.

Mode of use in case of proven symptoms (fever, flu, cough and depressive disorder or low mood) –Adults and adolescents over 15 years of age: Apply 20 drops under the feet or on the back, chest every 30 minutes, spacing as symptoms improve. Alternate the application site each time so as not to sensitize the skin too quickly. Maximum 8 applications per day. Apply a little apricot kernel or grapeseed base oils if the skin is sensitive and reactive.

Children from 10 to 14 years old: Apply 7 pure drops under the feet or on the back, chest, every hour, spacing as symptoms improve. Alternate the application site each time so as not to sensitize the skin too quickly. Maximum 5 applications per day. Apply a little apricot kernel or grapeseed base oils if the skin is sensitive and reactive.

Children from 7 to 10 years old: Apply 5 drops under the feet or on the back / chest, every hour, spacing as symptoms improve. Maximum 5 applications per day.

Note – In case of proven infection with coronavirus, the use of Essential Oils is recommended with the intention of modulating the inflammatory and immune reaction, to help the body to better manage the immune shock, to promote the forces of self-healing and weaken the microbe faster. This support is recommended in addition to wearing a suitable mask and following local and WHO guidelines, from the first characteristic symptoms of the infection, namely fever, cough, physical depression and breathing difficulties.

The atmospheric diffusion of Essential Oils known for their immune and respiratory properties is also strongly recommended Diffusion can decrease the contagiousness of the disease by way of supporting the immune and respiratory systems. Diffusible E.O’s to be mixed together in the diffuser are as follows: Tea tree, Ravintsara, Saro, Eucalyptus radiata, Fine lavender, Lemongrass and Bay laurel. Diffuse 10 minutes with a nebuliser every 2 hours.
