Using Aromatherapy & Essential Oils During the Summer

Summer months are always the hottest months. For those people who live in northern climates, summertime is the high time to enjoy the warm weather outside, soak in the sun and enjoy outdoor activities while it lasts. However, summer isn’t always about the roses and the sunshine - some people struggle with headaches and allergies during this season. The hot weather can often bring with it the nuisances of diseases, insects and other things that need your attention. Note that if you have kids and medical conditions, it becomes even more of a challenge. Fortunately, there are many essential oils that can help in remedying these side effects of summer!

My Aroma Summer Kit” includes 5 cooling essential oils perfect for the hot months. This summer kit includes Citronella, Eucalyptus, Geranium, Lavender & Peppermint Essential Oils, plus Neroli & Peppermint hydrosols.

About The Cooling Essential Oils

Citronella Cymbopogon nardus

Citronella is considered to be an insect repellent (Cymbopogon nardus). Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and lemon eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora) are also effective, but can cause skin irritation. It’s worth noting that not all insects are repelled by the same substance so it’s wise to modify the repellent blend in accordance with your relevant insect population.

Ar’home Spa & Lab has created a perfect blend, named “Bug OFF”; a blend of essential oils known for their fresh, bright scents as well as their effectiveness at keeping bugs at bay! https://arhomespalab.com/collections/summer-tropics/products/bug-off-spray

EucalyptusEucalyptus globulus

Eucalyptus acts as a nice alternative or complement to Peppermint and Spearmint oils in cooling blends. In addition to its ability to provide a cooling sensation, Eucalyptus essential oil contains a significant quantity of the oxide 1,8-Cineole. 1,8-Cineole is said to act as both an anti-inflammatory as well as an expectorant.

Geranium Pelargonium graveolens

Geranium essential oil is powerful for treating insect bites & cold sores.

“Sunburn” implies skin damage, but overexposure to the sun without burning is still tough on the skin. For healing and rejuvenating sun-exposed skin , try Lavender or Geranium essential oil blended with Aloe Vera gel.

Lavender – Lavendula angustifolia

Lavender essential oil is the top addition to a first aid kit during the summer. If you want to go on a trip or just out to the beach, lavender is a useful, all-round essential oil for soothing all sorts of skin irritations. Lavender also promotes peace, soothes grief and balances energy centers of the body. It is useful for all. Lavender can also be used as a stress reliever thanks to its sedative and calming properties. It is among the safest essential oils to use because it has anti-bacterial and rejuvenating properties. Lavender is obtained by steam distillation of freshly cut lavender garb flower tops.

Peppermint – Mentha piperita

Peppermint essential oil should be on your list. It helps in clearing the mind and refreshing our senses. Peppermint essential oil is also great for relieving various hangover symptoms: headache, nausea, upset stomach, mental fogginess, tiredness, etc.

Peppermint oil is quite stimulating and may interfere with sleeping; Peppermint is a powerful oil that only needs to be used in small amount.

Our Cooling Aloe Mint body lotion is an instant, refreshing lotion for your legs after a long summer’s day. Besides its cooling sensation, menthol is known to help relax and ease tension headaches and muscular aches and pains.

About The Cooling Hydrosols

A “Hydrosol” is the aromatic water that remains after producing an essential oil via steam or water distillation.

Hydrosols are gently aromatic, soothing and are a wonderful addition to room mists and body sprays intended to help keep you cool and refreshed. Unlike essential oils which should be diluted prior to being applied to the skin, hydrosols are water-soluble, and can be used directly on the skin without further dilution.

My 3 favorite hydrosols to use for cooling during summer are Peppermint, Lavender & Neroli hydrosols.

Peppermint hydrosol

Toning and refreshing, this hydrolat tightens pores and revives dull complexions.

It is known for relieving itchy skin and is also used in cased of excessive sweating and hot, flushed skin.

Lavender hydrosol

Refreshing and soothing, this hydrosol is used to treat sunburn, burns and insect bites.

Suitable for treating acne or oily areas, it promotes healing of pimples.

Neroli hydrosol

With a floral & sweet perfume, this hydrosol tones, refreshes, regenerates and soothes the skin. It is particularly suitable for dry skin. Neroli hydrosol is also used for its properties on the nervous system as it calms and facilitates sleep.
